In this blog, we will discuss the question “What’s the point of living?” and elaborate on the importance of life and how to make the best of it.

What’s the point of living?

The point of living is life itself. Without life there will be no point. We breathe, that’s the point. We smile, another point and we experience the world through our senses, that is many more points!

People who are usually under stress and depressed often say, what is the point of living? To them their entire existence is questioned due to external or internal threats they may have encountered.

Ever wondered why give it a try when we will finally die and people will forget that we existed? This is a common thought and a part of our collective consciousness, but to think that I have this one life, let me make the best of it and find why I exist, this is the entire point of living.

But to make it very clear, life has a point. Life comes just once and passes all too quickly, while we are trying to figure out the points only. We live only once and if we do not live life to the fullest giving it our best shot, then we haven’t lived at all.

The point of living is the only point worth taking up. Therefore, we live, we fall, we soar, we limp and we run, but we keep on upgrading life itself. Adding a purpose to life is like giving life a point to live by. With a purpose, we start building our affiliations around it, we start striving towards planning it, thus giving our life a direction.

In times of stress and mental anguish, we start thinking negatively about life, listing things we hate about life. However, life is not to be hated, but lived with hope.

Life needs a purpose

Everything happens for a reason, without which there will be no meaning. Life itself should have a purpose. A purpose to aspire towards, to cherish and finally to look forward to. This purpose is one of the points of living.

Purpose is defined as the real thing for which we get up every morning and start our day, look forward to tasks that serve to help us achieve and finally the point of living is purpose itself. Purpose helps shape our goal achieving, because it gives us aim. Aim serves the point of living. To reach our designated aim we plan and work hard to achieve that plan.

Life is beautiful. It is simple. It is an alluring gift that needs to be entertained to extract the best out of it. That again is the point of living. Instead of ranting about the things we might not have, we should focus on how to find the meaning of life.

No Nagging Negatives

To understand the point of life we should evade the negativity around us. There are people who indulge in teasing others and develop a negative aura. Stay away from such people. The naggers are the ones who would lament about even the smallest of things, like not being able to catch the bus on time, not finding their favourite brand in store, sometimes the sun is too bright or the rain is too rainy for them. These kinds of people are never happy and do not let others be happy as well.

Develop Gratitude

The point of living is when we are grateful for all that we have. Life gets meaning from gratitude, it  gets the point when we are happy with all that we have, being content with life is the main point of living. We need to make sure that our blessings are counted and we feel blessed.

Life has so much to give, only we need to accept it with an open heart and a fair mind; thus so far the point of living will therefore be gained.

Giving back

Altruism is the point of living. Feeling for others and giving back to the community is an integral part of our existence and gives it an entire meaning. Giving back has many connotations and one can give to the community in terms of not only money but also time and some good things imparted that they know. Giving away knowledge or good advice is also a very important thing to do.

What's the point of living? (A guide to finding out)

You never know a kind act by you or even a kind word or a smile may change somebody’s life. A story I once read in Chicken Soup for the Soul, I would like to share here. A teenage boy was depressed, so much so that he had suicidal ideation. He had lost his mother and his father immersed himself into his work and they never saw and seldom spoke to each other. The father had stopped showing warmth towards his son.

 One day a group of huggers came to the father’s place of work and went around giving hugs, their aim was that whoever got the hug had to pass it on to someone else and so on and so forth. The dad also got a hug. On his way back home, he thought of his son and decided to give him this hug. When he came home, he went upstairs and opened the door to his son’s room finding him sitting on the bed all forlorn and sad with a piece of paper in his hand.

Seeing his dad startled him. The dad came into the room and was amazed to feel a surge of emotion that he had been away from his son for long, he pulled him in and hugged him fiercely. The son was taken aback, but this immense love was intoxicating and he hugged his father back. Both of them cried and held each other for a long time.

After a while, the father sat down and spoke to this son promising him to now give him time and his attention and never keep back the love he feels for him. The son showed his dad the paper he was holding in his hand. The father read with renewed tears the suicide note that his son had written. That night the son had planned to commit suicide due to the lack of love and attention from his father.

The son took it back and tore it to pieces and hugged his dad back saying that “now I know that you love me and want me in your life, I will not take my life, because I have found the purpose of my life.” if the father had not come into his room and hugged him, giving him back the hug that was due, but most importantly giving back the life, the exact point of living to his son, he would have lost his son.

Therefore, let others know that there is a point in living and life is worth giving a best shot.

Indulge in the nature

Nature has a healing power. It emanates the supremacy of life, from the seas and lakes to the grasslands and mountain tops, desert to savannahs, nature speaks. If we take some out of our busy schedules and just look around, even look up at the sky with small puffs of clouds floating by, just feel the power of serenity wash over you. At that moment you feel that there is a point of living. There is a point in being alive.

To feel close to life itself we need to feel close to nature. Because nature is life. Seeing the birds fly from one place to another on tiny wings makes us think if they can make it then why can’t we understand the entire point of living? They have embraced the wind, the gathering of food from places and coming to their nest to rest at night. If the birds and animals live each moment of their lives, then why we humans have qualms about living and let live?

Grace Under Pressure

When these beings can go against all odds and still live, we should understand the point of living is in maintaining grace under pressure, standing tall in the face of adversity, not giving up and still gathering your pieces to build them up again.

What's the point of living? (A guide to finding out)

In his famous poem ‘If’ Rudyard Kipling writes,

If you can dream – and not make dreams your master;

If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two imposters just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools:

Rudyard Kipling too, in the year 1910 elaborated on a perfect recipe of life; a very valid point of living; never to give up hope and build again if life has broken down due to any reason, because there is a point in living.

Scream to Dream

Abraham Maslow says, “If you deliberately plan on being less then you are capable of being, then I warn you that you’ll be unhappy for the rest of your life.” Know your potential, dream of using it and accomplishing what you dream of, because in this you will find the point of living.

Dream and then show everyone what you are able to do with life. Let your work scream to tell what you are made up of. Life that does not accommodate dreaming is a difficult life, where people forget that they have been made of stuff that can rattle.

Intrinsic Motivations are worth it

Be content with personal growth and hook up with a bigger purpose in life rather than just trying to make a living.

“If you want to be faithful to someone, start by being faithful to yourself.” – Paulo Coelho

Serve yourself before you serve another, because unless and until your wants are fulfilled then only you can satisfy the needs of others. In other words, to save someone else you first need to save yourself. Stepping out of your comfort zone may be hard, but has to be done if you want to grow and live your dreams, accomplish that ‘one’ thing that makes you who you are.

It may be uncomfortable at first, but then, it is the only choice you have to find the point of living in.

Face thy Fears

To enjoy the point of living, you need to face your fears. Fears will scare us till we are frightened to face them. Once we stand up to them, facing towards them, they dissipate into thin air. This is how fickle the fears are.

Scare them before they scare you! You are strong. Get this mantra into your head and then experience its power. Strength comes from within. Get it all together because life has a point.

In this blog, we have discussed the question “What’s the point of living?” and elaborated on the importance of life and how to make the best of it.
