What do I want? (in life & work)

What do I want? (in life & work)

In this brief article, we will be discussing what do I want, what to do when I don’t know what I want, why is it important to know what do I want, and more information about what do I want.

What do you want?

This kind of question is what most people ask about themselves but they don’t have a clear answer for this question sooner in most people. After all, everyone wants something different in life and interests and talents differ between people in the world.

You will also know what you want in life when you appear to be content with life itself.

It is also possible that a career does not turn out to be what you expected in your life. Even a job that you carried out for a long time, might not seem so fitting anymore in your life.

Study and career in your life

This kind of question is what you need to think carefully and critically. When you are certain of the career path you would like to follow in your professional life, you can start working on realizing your goals for that certain career.

Before choosing an education it might be important to know what it will bring you in the certain field. After all your educational path will influence many choices concerning your future profession you will choose later.

In college, everyone wants to know what job you want, what kind of work you want to do, what company you want to work for in the future. However, no one asks the following important questions:

  • (How much free time do you want in your college life?)
  • (What do you want to spend money on when you work?)
  • (Who do you want to spend time with in your career?)
  • (What do you want to do for fun in your spare time?)

Yet, these are monumentally more significant questions than the ones that most college students would ask. The vast majority of my peers in college were working tirelessly towards getting a certain job in their future.

That could be in a certain niche such as consulting and banking or at a certain company such as Google or Microsoft. It was their main focus in life as reported.

Their main goal in that scenario. The one thing they worked towards in their whole lives.

But since they’ve graduated, most experts have seen unhappiness. Dissatisfaction. Unrest.

They got the job they wanted but they didn’t get a life they wanted when thay have lived their future. They didn’t consider or they ignored that the job might come with the following important aspects to consider:

  • A horrible work-life balance in your job
  • Limited growth from being at entry-level and there being fixed promotion tiers in the job
  • No time to travel with a limited vacation allowance in the job
  • Cut-throat competition among other first years in the job
  • And other aspects that create an unhappy or unfulfilling life from the job

They don’t always admit it but when you’re working 80 hour weeks, complaining incessantly, using alcohol and drugs as your source of fun, not sleeping, dreading Monday, and longing for the weekend which concludes that you have a shitty life from your supposed job. You need to start thinking the life you want in the future even if you are still in college or you are a fresh graduate.

You should live a future life where you will not be regretting your decisions in getting engaged in a job that might hurt you in the future. You should know what matters to you the most in the future once you have your job.

Career switch

When the career choice you made does not seem to be the right one, it may be time for a career switch for your future. To prevent ending up in the same situation, it is wise to overthink your new choice carefully at a certain time.

The question of what you want is important again in this kind of scenario. You need to ask yourself why you are not satisfied with your new job and what you want out of your new profession.

How to figure out what you want?

You can figure out what you want by going through the following questions. This is a question all of us think about at one point or another as mentioned before.

For some, the answer comes easily once questioned at a certain time. For others, it takes a lifetime to figure out due to a lot of experiences that are not making sense.

It’s easy to just go through the motions and continue to do what’s comfortable and familiar where one is staying at one’s comfort zone. But for those of you who seek fulfilment, who want to do more, these kinds of questions will help you paint a clearer picture of what you want to do with your life in the long run.

What are the things I’m most passionate about in life?

The first step to living a more fulfilling life is to think about the things that you’re passionate about all throughout your life. It’s essential to know what you’re passionate about so you can determine the very thing that drives you and makes you happy in your life.

The questions you should be asking here is what you want to do, what do you love about your life, and what do you like to do throughout your life. The point is, figure out what you love doing, then do more of it in your life.

What are my greatest successes in life so far?

Think about your past experiences and the things in your life you’re most proud of in those certain experiences. If you feel good about those experiences, you should repeat those experiences again

If you ran a marathon once and loved the feeling you had afterwards, start training for another one in your life. If your child grew up to be a star athlete or musician because of your teachings, then be a coach or mentor for other kids in your time.

Continue to do the things that have been most fulfilling for you in your whole life.

These answers can help you figure out what do you want in your life. It doesn’t mean you need millions of dollars to be happy in your life though.

What it does mean is answering these questions will help you set goals to reach certain milestones and create a path toward happiness and fulfilment in your life. Whom do I admire most in the world right now?

Following the path of successful people can set you up for success in this scenario.  Think about the people you respect and admire most in your life.

You need to think about the best qualities you want to get form them and the lessons that you can learn from them. According to some experts, you’re the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.

So don’t waste your time with people who hold you back from achieving your dreams in your life. Spend more time with happy, successful, optimistic people and you’ll become one of them in your life.

What do I not like to do in life?

An important part of figuring out what you want to do with your life is honestly assessing what you don’t want to do in your life at all. You need to consider the things that piss you off and what you don’t like about your current job right now.

Maybe you hate meetings even though you sit through 6 hours of them daily in your current job. If that’s the case, find a job where you can work more independently in your life.

The point is, if you want something to change in your life, you need to take action immediately in your life.

How hard am I willing to work to get what I want in life?

Great accomplishments never come easy in your life. If you want to do great things with your life, you’re going to have to make a great effort in your life right now.

That will probably mean putting in more hours the average person, getting outside your comfort zone and learning as much as you can to achieve as much as you can at a time.
But here’s the cool part which is typically the journey that is the most fulfilling part.

It’s during these seemingly small and insignificant moments that you’ll typically find that “aha” moments that helps you answer this question in your life
