A sample resignation letter for a job you just started can look like (greatsampleresume.com):

If you have recently started a new job and you need to quit because you are traveling abroad, you have a new job opportunity, or other personal or family reasons, it is important to let your employer know you will not continue working for them.

After having a conversation with your boss (and really making sure that you want to leave), follow up by submitting a formal resignation letter by giving your employer at least two weeks notice but if you need to leave on short notice also state it in your letter and be very clear about it.

Resignation letter: Business letter format

Here are some tips on what your resignation letter should include and what to avoid:

  • Your contact information and your employer’s at the top.
  • A professional salutation.
  • Keep your letter brief and if you can explain why you are resigning but without being too detailed. This can be included in the first paragraph along with the date you will be resigning, considering at least a 2 weeks’ notice.
  • Keep a positive attitude throughout your letter, avoiding negative comments even if you were not really satisfied with your job.
  • Express gratitude for the opportunity you were given.
  • Include your personal contact information in case your employer needs to contact you (i.e. personal email or cell phone).
  • Sign your letter.

Negative repercussions to consider…

If you have decided to leave your new job even especially if have been working for them only 3 days, it is important to consider the repercussions for leaving early:

  • The company could blacklist you.
  • It could be detrimental to your reputation.
  • Your coworkers could be angry since you are leaving so soon and they will need to take over your responsibilities.
  • You could be risking your financial stability if you don’t really have another option in line.

While it is not a secret your employer may not be happy about the fact they hired you, trained you and now you are leaving right at the start, still you are not obliged to stay.

However, try to be as honest as you can possibly be and offer your sincerest apologies.

Dear Ms. Maple,

I’d like to begin this letter by saying thank you for offering me the position of inside sales at L&M Products. From my first day just three months ago, I’ve felt welcome and valued and until recently, I have felt my future was here. Unfortunately, that has turned out not to be the case, and it is in no way the fault of L&M.

Due to circumstances beyond my control and related to the health of my mother, I will no longer be able to continue my employment, and my last day will be Friday, September 22, which is two weeks from today. I am in the process of making plans to relocate to Kansas to care for her in the short term while making arrangements for her long term care.

I will continue to develop leads and leave complete notes for the individual you hire to replace me, and if you have any questions or special requests before my last day, please know I’ll do what I can to help with the transition.

I sincerely regret this turn of events. I am grateful to you for your belief in my potential and wish I could have stayed on to prove us both right. Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,

Wilma Watkins”

“Dear Ms. Schilt,

I am sending this letter to let you know that I am resigning from my sales position at ABC Company due to needing to accept a different job offer elsewhere. I know I have just recently begun working there, so I hope it will not be too much of an inconvenience. I will, of course, stay on for two weeks so my last day will be April 15, 2014. Please accept this letter as my official two weeks’ notice of resignation from ABC Company. I hope you understand.

I would like to apologize in advance for any problems that my resignation may cause to ABC Company. I assure you that I will work as hard as possible during my last two weeks to try to minimize inconvenience to anybody. If you have any questions or need to get in touch with me for any reason, please contact me at (555)-555-5555 or [email] and I will return messages as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation with me as I learned the ropes at ABC Company. I am grateful for the experience I did earn in a short amount of time. I wish you every success and hope that our paths may cross again at some point. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Victoria Mitton
