Sample resignation letters in Canada can be found all over the internet and they follow pretty much the same format as the resignation letters written in the UK.

If an employee is letting its employer know they are leaving, doesn’t really matter if this is because you work in construction, at a hospital, a restaurant, or if you need to leave because you have a new job opportunity or need a “job change”, still it is important to notify your employer in advance (if possible).

If this is your first job and you have never written a resign letter, then we will mention some important tips when writing one.

However, here (and all over the web) you can find PDF or Word documents with full samples and templates you can use.

Depending on where you are located you will need to consider handing in your resignation letter with a notice period of the 15-day notice, 30 days/1 month, or 2 months.

In addition, you could consider the following reasons people use when resigning:

  • Moving or relocating to a different city/country
  • New job opportunities
  • Retirement
  • Personal reasons such as health, divorce, death of a loved one, getting married and taking care of their family (full time)
  • Going back to school
  • Not liking their current job
  • Having a negative experience at work
  • Other reasons

Resignation letter and giving written notice

According tp LawDepot, “A Resignation Letter is a document that you write to give notice to your employer that you plan to leave your job within a certain amount of time. Two weeks is usually the standard amount of notice that would be given to an employer from a permanent employee (an employee that has passed their probation period).”

Submitting your resignation in writing may be required if it is indicated in your employment contract.

Even if it is not a requirement, it is important to submit your resignation in writing so that there is a physical record outlining you left your job and it is also important to keep a copy for your own personal records.

In regards to the notice period consider, as Canadianbudgetbinder.com indicates, “It is not a legal requirement in Canada to give two weeks notice to your employer but if you are in a role that will be hard to fill it’s the smart thing to do.”

This will leave a good perception since you are letting your employer know in advance you are leaving so they can find a suitable replacement.

How do I write a resignation letter?

Consider the following key elements when writing your resignation letter:

  • Include your name and your position with the company.
  • Add your recipient accordingly (e.g. HR manager, hiring manager, or your line manager).
  • Briefly include the reason why you are resigning, however, this is optional (e.g. family emergency, going back to school, personal reasons, etc.)
  • State the notice period if required (date of your last shift with the company).
  • The date you will deliver the resignation letter.
  • Your name and signature at the bottom.

Additionally, consider thanking your company (show appreciation) for the opportunity, offer additional help with the transition period (e.g. finding a suitable replacement/training), ask any question you may have that couldn’t get solved by your line manager/supervisor, avoid venting or complaining about your colleagues, your work, or your boss.

Make sure you keep your letter short and straight to the point but professional.
