Left hand itching (what does it mean)

Left hand itching

In this blog post, we will talk about what a left hand itching means, taking into account both superstitions and medical advice.

Left hand itching, what should I do?

It is not uncommon to sometimes feel a slight itching in the left palm.

From a medical point of view, you don’t have to worry, but when it comes to superstitions, you need to know what to expect, so as not to be taken by surprise later!

According to popular belief, when your left hand is itching, you are in danger of losing a serious amount of money.

So watch out for the transaction you will be involved in in the near future and be mindful before spending money.

If you want to get rid of the unpleasant sensation in the palm of your hand, it is good to use a wooden object to alleviate the itching, thus ensuring that you will be lucky and that fate will not turn against you!

The “superstitions” of our body

Over time, people have noticed a certain connection between the “signs” that our body sometimes gives us: itching, wheezing, numbness, and certain facts, events, that take place.

People have correlated them and all this has given rise to superstitions about the different anatomical parts of our body.

For example, if your head itches you, it is said that your condition undergoes a transformation for the better, that your social position undergoes an improvement.

It is said that if you have a rebellious strand of hair left in your hair, you will go a long way.

If your ear inches you, it is a sure sign of rain (this is one of the superstitions that can be scientifically explained; the cilia in the ear get wet from the moisture in nature and this favours the tickling that we take as itching).

 If your ears suddenly turn red and become hot, it is a sign that someone is talking about you… and not good things!

If your nose itches, you will most definitely argue with someone.

If your right eyebrow itches you – you will see an old friend; if your left eyebrow itches you – you’re on the right path in life.

If you rub your eyes, it means that you will soon see someone dear.

If your right cheek itches you, someone wants you; your left cheek itches you – someone doesn’t want to hurt you. If your lips itch you – you will soon kiss someone.

If your left palm itches you, you will lose money; if your right hand itches you – you will gain money.

Left hand itching – medical explanation

In medical terms, itching is called pruritus and is the most common dermatological symptom, and can be caused by many internal and external factors – of course, we can only talk about pruritus when the itching lasts and returns even if you scratch your left hand itching.

Most of the time, the factors are external.

The hand is the most used part of the body, so the skin of the palm comes in contact with many stimuli, and some of them can cause contact dermatitis

This condition is the most common explanation for itchy palms and can be caused by soap, detergent, creams, cleaning products and even touching certain vegetables.

Also, some fungal or bacterial infections can be manifested by itching in the palms and soles.

In these cases, the skin of the palm may be red, irritated, inflamed. If the skin looks normal but you have itching, stress and anxiety may be to blame.

In rarer cases, itching of the palms is caused by endocrine problems, diseases of the liver, kidneys or digestive system. Itching does not only appear on the palms and is not the only symptom.

Left hand itching (what does it mean)

Itching is an unpleasant sensation that induces the need to rub or scratch the area.

In severe cases, itching can affect the patient’s sleep-wake rhythm, can cause anxiety or depression, significantly reducing his quality of life.

Constant scratching to reduce itching can damage the skin (causing abrasions, lichenification of the skin) and reduce its effectiveness as a protective barrier.

 Itching is a symptom, a subjective sensation. It is important to differentiate itching from tickling, burning, pain or touch.

Itching can be physiological when the scratching action removes a potentially dangerous agent or can occur due to medications or psychiatric conditions, and is also an important symptom in dermatological or systemic diseases.

Causes and risk factors

Itching is a physiological mechanism of self-protection similar to other sensations such as pain, touch, vibration, hot and cold, protecting the skin from dangerous external agents.

Not all episodes of pruritus require immediate evaluation by a physician. Most causes are not serious conditions that require medical attention.

The following signs and symptoms associated with pruritus may indicate a need for medical consultation:

  • weight loss, fatigue and night sweats – may indicate a serious infection or tumour aetiology;
  • weakness, numbness or tingling – may indicate damage to the nervous system;
  • abdominal pain, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) – may indicate liver or gallbladder damage;
  • intense thirst, pollakiuria (frequent urination) and weight loss – suggestive of diabetes.

Recommendations to get rid of the unpleasant itching sensation

For smoking patients, quitting cigarettes can be particularly effective.

Not only does smoking reduce the effectiveness of hepatitis C treatment, but it can also lead to smokers’ nicotine poisoning syndrome, characterized by episodes of flushing, dizziness, throbbing headache, lethargy, joint pain and itching.

Cold compresses with water or chamomile tea can soothe areas affected by itching.

The compresses can be kept in the refrigerator, in boxes with lids, easy to take and placed on the problem area, to soothe intense itching.

Hydration is one of the most important ways to soothe itching and burning. The patient should drink enough water to keep the whole body hydrated.

Hydration of the skin is equally important. Therefore, it is recommended to apply moisturizers at least twice a day.

For optimal results, moisturizers without perfume or alcohol are recommended.

Also, shower gels and soaps with alcohol, perfume or strong cleaning agents should be avoided.

For cleansing the face, it is good to use a gentle cleanser, and for the body, also a cleanser for babies, to prevent excessive drying of the skin.

The heat aggravates the itching, so it is important to avoid hot showers, in favour of baths with lukewarm water or cold showers, if they are tolerated by the patient.

Clothes, more precisely, the fabric of clothes, matter a lot for the attenuation or potentiation of the itching state.

Light clothes, made of natural materials that allow the body to breathe, for example – cotton are recommended.

The most important way to get rid of pruritus is to refrain from scratching. For this, both cold compresses and the application of a simple ice cube on the affected area can work.
