5 tools to use in difficult situations
In her book, Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy, Sheryl Sandberg, COO on Facebook, talks about the tools we can use not only to deal with difficult situations but also to strengthen our character. Here are five of the strongest.
- The “three p” – In her book, Sandberg mentions the three “p’s” – pervasiveness, personalization and permanence.
Something may go wrong, but that doesn’t mean everything is going wrong. We each have our own way. Nothing lasts indefinitely.
- Work on your gratitude – Always remember the things you are grateful for. It will be easier for you to access them when you are facing a difficult situation. Gratitude helps you reduce stress and see things in perspective, both essential ingredients to be able to make difficult situations. Every night before going to bed, write in a diary at least three things you are grateful for that day.
- Learn to laugh at anything – If you can find humor in any situation, you will be well equipped to face all the challenges that life will throw in your way. Your own reactions to who you are or the situations in your life influence how others react and help you control how others perceive you.
- Take a conscious approach to life – That means living consciously instead of getting used to it. At any time you can make healthy choices for yourself, from having a restful sleep, to exercising and meditating daily. And last but not least, living in the present.
- Build strong relationships – In crisis situations, relationships with other people can help us get up or sink deeper. The soul bonds we form with other people are some of the strongest points of support we have in crisis situations. Spend quality time with family and friends. Support, cultivate and enjoy these relationships.
